Diisobutyl aluminum hydride (DIBAL-H) is a reducing agent commonly used in organic synthesis. It is a powerful and selective reducing agent for the conversion of esters to aldehydes, ketones, or alcohols.DIBAL-H is a pyrophoric compound, meaning it reacts violently with air and moisture. Therefore, it must be handled with extreme caution and under an inert atmosphere, such as nitrogen or argon.

In the presence of DIBAL-H, esters are reduced to aldehydes or ketones depending on the reaction conditions. The reaction typically takes place at low temperatures (-78 to -20 degrees Celsius) and can be carried out in various solvents, such as diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran.

DIBAL-H is also used in the reduction of nitriles to primary amines, imines to amines, and nitro compounds to amines. It is a versatile reducing agent that offers high selectivity and mild reaction conditions.
