Why use titanium instead of stainless steel?

The main reasons for using titanium rather than stainless steel include titanium's advantages in terms of corrosion resistance, lightness, strength, and difficulty of machining.

Corrosion resistance of titanium

Titanium has strong corrosion resistance because of the strong affinity between titanium and oxygen, which can form a dense oxide film in air or oxygen-containing media to protect the titanium internal matrix from corrosion. This oxide film can quickly self-heal or regenerate even after the titanium surface is mechanically abraded, thus ensuring the corrosion resistance of titanium12.

Lightweighting of titanium

Titanium has a low density of 4.51 g/cm³, which is about 60% of steel, 50% of copper and 1.8 times of aluminium. This makes titanium products lighter than stainless steel products; for example, a titanium thermos cup may weigh less than 200 grams, whereas a stainless steel cup of the same capacity may weigh 300 or 400 grams23.

Strength and processing difficulty of titanium

Titanium alloys have high strength and good mechanical properties, and their high tensile strength makes them suitable for use in making parts that require high strength and wear resistance. However, titanium is difficult to process, and processes such as welding, plating and cold drawing need to be carried out in a vacuum or in an environment filled with inert gas, which increases production costs24.
