Polyacrylamide does not have the toxic effects of acrylamide monomer. The polymer is hydrophilic (displays an affinity for water) and can form aqueous solutions of very high concentration. Because of their gel-like properties, these solutions are employed as flocculants in the removal of suspended particles from sewage and industrial effluents (e.g., wastewater from paper mills). Through the highly reactive amide (NH2) group, the polymer can be chemically modified to produce positively charged cationic polymer or negatively charged anionic polymer. Ionic polymers are especially useful in separating metals from residues in various mineral-processing and metallurgical operations.

High molecular weight (106–3 × 107 Da) polyacrylamide (PAM) is commonly used as a flocculant in water and wastewater treatment, as a soil conditioner, and as a viscosity modifier and friction reducer in both enhanced oil recovery and high volume hydraulic fracturing.

Polyacrylamide is abbreviated as PAM, and is divided into anion (HPAM) cation (CPAM). Non-ionic (NPAM) is a linear polymer, and it is one of the most widely used varieties of water-soluble polymer compounds.

Anionic polyacrylamide has a wide range of uses such as in petroleum, Water Treatment Chemicals, Oilfield Chemicals, metallurgy, electric power, chemical industry, paper making ,printing and dyeing, coal, tanning, pharmaceutical, food, stone, and so on, they can be used in solid-liquid separation,industrial waste water treatment and the recycling of waste water.
