A thermocouple is a type of temperature sensor that is widely used for a variety of industrial and scientific applications due to its simplicity, reliability, and wide temperature range. The principle behind the operation of a thermocouple is known as the Seebeck effect, which states that when two different metals are joined together and their junctions are at different temperatures, a voltage is produced that is proportional to the temperature difference.
1. Thermoelectric Alloys:Common combinations include :iron-constantan (type J), copper-constantan (type T), and chromel-alumel (type K).
2.Junctions: One junction, called the measuring junction, is placed where the temperature is to be measured. The other junction, known as the reference junction, is kept at a known temperature (often room temperature) or is compensated for in some way.
3.Insulation: The thermoelectric wires are insulated from each other and from the environment to prevent unwanted thermal conduction paths.
4.Protection Tube: To protect the thermocouple from harsh environments, it may be encased in a protective tube made of ceramic, metal, or other materials depending on the application.
5.Connection Head and Terminal Block: At the end opposite the measuring junction, there's usually a connection head with a terminal block where the thermocouple wires can be connected to an instrument or control system.
