Citric acid (CA), also known as citric acid. The molecular form is C₆H₈O₇. It is an important organic acid. Citrate enhances but does not cause soreness. Citric acid in pharmaceutical preparations causes pain by enhancing acid-sensing ion channel 1 (ASIC1). Data suggest that ASIC 1 and ASIC are necessary for nociceptive responses induced by subcutaneous acid perfusion. Neutral citrate can enhance acid nociceptive perception by removing the inhibitory effect of extracellular calcium ions on ASIC 1, although it does not induce ASIC 1 current or nociceptive behavior per se. ASIC 1 was identified as a key receptor for the detection of acid-induced injection site pain and was not stimulated by neutral citrate. In addition, citric acid enhanced ASIC 1 by removing calcium from the receptor's extracellular inhibition.
