DTBP is a volatile, yellowish transparent liquid and a dialkyl organic peroxide. It is used as a free radical donor in crosslinking of polymers (such as silicone rubber, EPDM, polyethylene, etc.) and degradation of polypropylene.

DTBP is an effective initiator for producing low density polyethylene. Both the kettle method and the tube method under high pressure are applicable. In practical production, it is often used in combination with other peroxides in order to obtain a wide polymerization temperature range.

In the temperature range of 95~185℃, it can also be used for polymerization or copolymerization of styrene. In practice, two or more peroxides with different activities are often used in combination to reduce the residual monomer in the final polymer and improve the reactor efficiency. In the temperature range of 130~175℃, it can also be used as initiator for solution polymerization or copolymerization of acrylate and methacrylate, especially for the production of coatings. It can also be used as the bulk of acrylic acid ester and methacrylic acid ester and the initiator for suspension polymerization or copolymerization.
