The Stab-In float collar and shoe method presents an enhanced approach for cementing large diameter casing. By utilizing the Stab-In float collar and shoe, the drill pipe can be directly inserted into the Float Shoe or Collar, enabling the pumping of cement through the drill pipe until returns reach the surface. Subsequently, the cement is displaced to the bottom of the drill pipe, and a wiper dart can be utilized in the process. Following this, the drill pipe is picked up, circulated, and ultimately pulled out of the hole.
Notably, the use of large plugs becomes essential for separating the cement from the mud, which subsequently need to be drilled out along with any cement in the casing. This method is specifically employed for cementing large diameter casings that are lowered on drill pipe. The special cementing considerations associated with this method are attributed to the high displacement volume of large diameter casing.
This method significantly enhances displacement accuracy, as cement mixing and pumping activities continue until cement returns reach the surface. Moreover, it leads to improved cement quality by reducing the cement/mud interface area and ensuring high flow velocity in the drill pipe. Notably, the reduced volume of cement minimizes contamination, while the shortened pumping time eliminates the need for cement retarders. Furthermore, conventional displacement's requirement for calculating excess cement factor is alleviated by the Stab-in method, where excess cement need not be greater than the volume of the drill pipe. This negates the need for large plugs, thereby reducing net rig time as circulating, pumping, and drill-out times are minimized.
