What will effect silica matting agent's matte effect?

Main material of matting agent used in coating is synthetic silica. Comparing with natural silica, synthetic silica has

many different properties like high purity and inertia. What makes silica into effective silica matting agent is due to

its particle size, porosity and density. For example, it is resistant to degradation by ultraviolet light.

* Particle size: there are two crucial points that effect coating's glossy deeply. One is silica's average particle size, the

other is particle size distribution. Under the statement of excellent particle size distribution will make an excellent 

matte result. The silica matting agent which particle size is between 8-10 um is suitable to use in wood coating with

thicker surface. Silica matting agent with large particle size will be easier to disperse and it has little effect on the viscosity 

of the coating system.

* Porosity and density: the synthetic silica is not solid particles. Its mirco substrate is sponge-like porous particles and this

has lots of pores which are filled with air. Silica matting agent with high porosity and low density can create a more

excellent matte effect.
