What is silica matting agent ?

Main material: silicon dioxide /  SiO2

Using in coating's silicon dioxide is mainly synthetic silica. Normally it is classified into two types. One is fumed silica and

the other is precipitated silica. The micro structures of these two types silica are both amorphous or glassy. The natural

silica is also called as quartz and it has not matting effect. Only synthetic silica has excellent matting effect. Cause its main

material is natural quartz. First it is acted with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate under high temperatures. After this 

process, we will get another new chemical substrate named sodium silicate. Then it is processed with different technologies

to form fumed silica or precipitated silica.

How can silica matting agent works in coating?

An additive used in coatings belongs to an specific agent which can change optical performance of coating surface. This type 

silica matting agent can produce expected micro-roughness which can decrease the strength of coating surface's lightness.

So it is crucial for some high level wood coating which is expected to create simple and elegant finished surface.

1. Prevents Clumping: When wet, paint can become thick and difficult to spread. Silica helps to prevent the formation of 

clumps by absorbing excess moisture, ensuring a smooth consistency.

the spray nozzles or applicators, ensuring a clean and consistent finish.

4. Protects the Paint Film: The abrasive nature of silica can help to fill small surface imperfections, creating a smoother canvas 

for the paint to adhere to and forming a more durable, long-lasting paint film.

5. Improves Appearance: By providing a uniform base, silica aids in achieving a more even color distribution and a smoother, 

glossy finish.

It's essential to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the specific paint product you're using, as different formulations 

may call for different ratios of anti-caking agents. Always check the paint's technical data sheet for the appropriate use of silicon 

dioxide or other additives.
