Cylinder Barrel: A sealed container filled with hydraulic oil.

Piston: Divides the cylinder into two chambers (rod-side chamber/rod-less chamber), moving under pressure differences.

Piston Rod: Connects the piston to external loads, transmitting thrust or pull force.

Sealing System (Seals): Prevents hydraulic oil leakage and maintains system pressure.

Basic Principle

A hydraulic cylinder is the core actuator in a hydraulic transmission system, operating based on Pascal's Law (pressure transmission in a confined fluid). It converts mechanical energy into hydraulic pressure through a hydraulic pump, driving the linear movement of the piston within the cylinder, ultimately transforming hydraulic energy into mechanical energy output.

3. Cavitation

Causes: Rapid pressure drops in the hydraulic fluid, creating vapor bubbles that implode and damage surfaces.

Maintenance:

Maintain proper fluid viscosity and temperature (follow Caterpillar’s operating guidelines).

Check for restrictions in fluid supply lines or pump issues.

Avoid abrupt pressure changes by using pressure-relief valves.

4. Rod Corrosion or Bent Rods

Causes: Exposure to moisture, chemicals, or excessive side loads.

Maintenance:

Apply protective coatings to rods and clean them after exposure to harsh environments.

Inspect rods for bending; replace if deformed to prevent seal failure.

Use rod guards or boots in corrosive or debris-heavy environments.
