Eugenol is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₁₀H₁₂O.

              一.Chemical Properties: It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a strong clove-like aroma. It is slightly soluble in water but mixes well with solvents like ethanol, chloroform, and ether. Chemically, it belongs to the phenol class of compounds, with the hydroxyl group in molecular structure being a key site of chemical activity. This allows it to undergo various chemical reactions, such as neutralization with bases to form phenol salts.

        二. Natural Sources: Eugenol is primarily found in essential oils of plants such as clove oil, cinnamon leaf oil, and nutmeg oil. The content ofugenol in clove oil can be as high as 70-85%. It is a secondary metabolite produced by plants during growth, serving various functions like defending against pests and attracting pollinating insects.

                      Applications

              1. Medical Field

           （1）Antibacterial ingredients: Eugenol has good antibacterial, inhibiting the growth of various pathogens like E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. It is used in oral products like toothpaste and mouthwash to reduce bacterial growth, prevent and alleviate oral inflammation such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

            (2)Local Anesthetic: Eugol has a certain anesthetic effect. In dental treatments, it can be used as a natural local anesthetic to relieve pain during dental procedures. It works by with certain ion channels on nerve cell membranes, thereby inhibiting the transmission of nerve impulses.

           (3) Pharmaceutical raw materials: Eugenol is also an important intermediate in synthesis of various drugs. For example, it can be used to synthesize vanillin, a widely used raw material in the pharmaceutical industry that can be further used make antiepileptic drugs.
