Torlon® PAI (polyamide-imide) combines the special properties of thermoset polyimides with the advantages of melt-processable thermoplastics. Wear-resistant grades perform well in both dry and lubricated environments. High-strength grades retain their toughness, strength and stiffness at temperatures up to 525°F (275°C), making PAI one of the higher-performing thermoplastics in the industry. It also has broad chemical resistance, including strong acids and organics.
 
PAI exhibits higher compressive strength and impact resistance than most advanced engineering plastics. Excellent dimensional stability results from high creep resistance and a very low coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE).
 
Torlon balls are widely used in automatic transmissions and within sailboat cable sheaves due to their excellent resistance to high pressure, salt spray, oil, abrasion, and low density.
 
However, because Torlon PAI is a reactive polymer, it increases its molecular weight through chain extension, branching and cross-linking when heated.
