Which Polycarbonate Sheet Is Right for me?

General Purpose Polycarbonate

Highly transparent to light and has good optical clarity. Stiff and strong material that can retain its rigidity up to 275°F (135°C). Has a glass-like appearance but is 250 times the impact resistance of glass making it virtually shatterproof. Can withstand sun exposure before “yellowing” for about 5-7 years.

UV-Resistant Polycarbonate

This type combines the transparency and impact strength of general-purpose polycarbonate but is treated with a UV-resistant coating on both sides giving it the ability to last longer before weathering. It is a bit tougher and more tolerable of extreme conditions. Can last up to 10 years before degrading/yellowing, sometimes even as long as 15 years.

Abrasion Resistant Polycarbonate

While UV and General Purpose Polycarbonate have lower scratch-resistant properties, Abrasions Resistant offers better durability and resistance in that regard. It also has a coating on both sides that improves the resistance to weathering, ultraviolet damage, and chemicals.

Twin-wall/Multi-wall Polycarbonate

This type of polycarbonate is super lightweight and offers a high degree of thermal insulation properties. It is basically unbreakable, UV resistant, and weather resistant. It is commonly used in exterior applications such as greenhouses, roofing panels, and other outdoor applications. Designed with “flutes” that run between the two surfaces of the material that enhance airflow and insulation.

Colored Polycarbonate

Retains equal durability as general-purpose but comes in a variety of colors and degrees of transparency. It is stronger than glass and acrylic, can be easily fabricated, and is super versatile. Common colors are bronze and grey but can come in almost any color. Used to enhance design and displays, and can be used both indoors and outdoors.
