Manual gearbox

A manual gearbox, or shift pad, is a type of gearbox that requires driver input to change gear. The driver must engage the clutch by depressing/releasing the pedal and use the gear lever to select the appropriate gear ratio to control the torque from the engine to the wheels.

Modern cars are usually equipped with five- or six-speed manual gearboxes, depending on engine capacity and model year. However, early cars had three- or four-speed manual gearboxes, and there are also examples of seven-speed manual gearboxes. Speed indicates gear ratio.

In general, anual gearboxes allow any gear to be selected for a certain period of time, while sequential manual gearboxes only allow the next higher or lower gear to be selected. The gear lever is usually mounted on the floor, but some cars also have a gear lever on the steering wheel or on the console (dashboard).

Torque Converter Automatic

An automatic transmission, as the name implies, is an automatic shift gearbox, which means that the driver does not have to shift gears manually. In this case, the torque converter multiplies the torque even if the output speed is low. This is achieved by directing the fluid from the turbine away from the stator while locking the freewheel.

Unlike conventional fluid couplings, which cannot increase torque, torque converters have a stator that changes the drive characteristics to increase torque during high slip speeds. Torque converters are used in heavy-duty engines that produce more torque. These transmissions are better designed and less prone to damage.
