Torque converter for automatic transmission

An automatic gearbox, as the name suggests, is a gearbox that shifts gears automatically, which means that the driver does not have to manually change gears. In this case, the torque converter increases torque even when the output speed is low. This is achieved by diverting the turbine fluid away from the stator while locking the clutch.

Unlike conventional fluid couplings, which cannot increase torque, torque converters have a stator that modifies the drive characteristics to increase torque at high slip speeds. Torque converters are used in heavy duty engines that produce more torque. These transmissions are better designed and less prone to damage.

A DCT, or dual clutch transmission, is a type of automatic gearbox that uses two independent clutches, each for an odd and even number of gear ratios. The larger outer clutch drives the even number of gears, while the smaller inner clutch drives the odd number of gears.

Since any of these variable gear ratios (odd and even) can be preselected by driving in any gear without interrupting the torque distribution to the wheels, DCT is the fastest shifting passenger car transmission. There are two main types of double clutch transmissions - wet multiplate clutches or dry single plate clutches.

Wet clutch DCTs use oil for cooling and are designed for engines with a torque of 350 Nm or more. Dry clutch DCTs are suitable for smaller engines up to 250 Nm of torque. However, dry clutch DCTs are more fuel efficient due to the absence of fluid pump losses.
