Carmine (Carmine red) is a "semi-synthetic" dye, a complex of aluminum and the natural dye Cochineal (carmine acid). Carmine is a widely used "natural" food additive.

Carmine, also known as Edible Red No. 102 (Japan), Edible Red No. 7, Ponceau 4R, Scarlet, Bright Scarlet, is an aqueous azo colorant, and its chemical name is 1-(4'-sulfonic acid group- 1'-naphthylazo)-2-naphthol-6,8-disulfonic acid trisodium salt, which is an isomer of amaranth, the molecular formula is C20H11O10N2S3Na3. Carmine is the most widely used and most used monoazo synthetic pigment in China.
